I think when some couples think of engagement photos, the first location they may think of is the beach or perhaps a park. They show up with their wedding photographer snap a few head shots (maybe a few walking shots along the beach) and there done. What I like to tell the couples I work with, is that if you’re looking for a simple head shot picture of of the both of you, you’re better of having a friend take the picture and saving the money.

But if you’re looking for something different, with style and that really speaks visually about the both of you as a couple, then you’re probably going to want me to photograph your engagement session.

The engagement session is about the both of you. It’s not just a photo you’re going to display at your wedding, but their memories of your common interest as a couple. That’s why I prefer working with couples who are looking to do something different. While location is important, it doesn’t have to be at the beach or a park.

Working with a couple getting married in San Diego this December, we decided to photograph their engagement session at the LDS Temple in Redlands, California. The main reason being that they are both a big part of the Church and that the Temple offered a a nice backdrop.

Working with the couple, I learned a bit about their personalities (which is always nice when it comes time to photograph their wedding). I find the more animated a couple, the better the photos. We where able to capture both romantic moments between the couple as well as those silly moments as seen in the image to the left. I can tell when a couple is truly in love and the eye contact between them reveals this. It’s these moments that make for a more natural and lasting image. While I tend to give more direction rather than just pose a couple, it’s the true personality and love of each couple that brings out the best in their images.

Also, one thing I like to ask my couples to do is to bring two changes of clothing. Typically a lighter color and one darker, more formal. While the couple in this engagement session chose blue and browns, the colors worked perfectly with the environment. Your photographer should advise you of the colors to wear and or style of clothing as well.

In the end, if I photograph your wedding or engagement session, be prepared for some physical activity. Nothing too but fun as I had this couple run for the final “scene” in their engagement photo session. As a rule I always tell the couples if I ask you to do something and you don’t feel comfortable, then just tell me. Your comfort is much more important than the shot and I can always create a different type of image best suited for you both.
