Event Photography - Sickle Cell Foundation of Orange County

I had the pleasure of photographing this years annual black tie event for Orange County's Sickle Cell Foundation. Unlike weddings, portrait, or product commercial photography, there's never a dull moment when it comes to event photography, especially an event where you have lots happening. This years event was a celebrity black tie poker event to help bring awareness to Sickle Cell Disease. I have to say that of all the events I have photographed, the coordinators of the black tie event had their act together, which made my job a lot easier.

Working events as a photographer can be quite challenging. You're dealing with many factors which can impede your progress and success in good quality work. Things like poor event planning, lighting problems, and the attendees. This particular event was held at the Wyndham Hotel in Orange County, California, which meant we where working with a smaller venue. Nothing like working at a civic or convention center, which requires multiple photographers and assistants.

event lightingI think the biggest challenge we had at this event was lighting. We where dealing with a large banquet hall and high ceilings. The room was kept dark for mood lighting most of the night. I'm rather picky about my lighting, so a single on camera flash as my light source was out of the question. We could have set up lighting around the room, but the mood would have been lost both by me triggering the strobes and by the strobes lighting the room with bright light every time I took a picture.  Plus, we where moving a lot and setting up strobes throughout the room would have been an issue in some parts of the room as well as the areas outside of the reception hall.

The solution was to use one of my assistances. I had Jessi holding a boom arm with a Nikon SB800 at the end of it. We used this as the key light while I had another SB800 on my camera as the fill. To capture the ambient lighting and maintain the mood on film, I dragged my shutter to allow more of the natural background light in. The result of the event shoot was awesome. We where able to light our subjects, while preserving the mood of the event.

I would say that the overall event was a success, both from the planning of theevent by the coordinators to the results of the photos.

Event photography doesn't have to involve bright strobes and well lit rooms. Here, I wanted to capture the ambiance and mood of the reception room.

Here you have Phil Gates  of the Phil Gates Blues Band as entertainment for the event. Rather than blast flash and kill the ambiance of the room, I dragged my shutter and used an on camera flash as fill light. There was a lot of incandescent lighting around, so I did not change my white balance as I wanted to maintain the integrity of the lighting.

Commercial Photography in 45 Minutes

I decided to blog on the subject of photographing a subject in 45 minutes for the simple fact that it can be done effectively providing you have a subject that can change and adapt quickly. And, if you have a photographer who is quick to see potential shots and as well as quick with ideas. (Side Note: I still prefer taking my time, but there are instances where fast photography is essential, especially if you are wedding photographer or news journalist photographer.)

While my subject happened to be actress Kim Marlowe (and an individual who can change and adapt quickly), this can be accomplished with just about any subject, professional or not.

The photo shoot ran a total of 45 minutes. The point of the shoot was to provide Kim with some quick head and commercial photographs. My dilemma, I had only an hour prior to a regularly scheduled appointment. However, Kim was only available on the date that I had the appointment, therefore, the result is a quick 45 minute shoot which yielded 4 distinct looks both usable by Kim as well as I for stock photography.

  • Total Images captured: 371
  • Total photography time: 45 minutes
  • Wardrobe changes: 4

  • 10:00 - Arrive at the home of actress Kim Marlowe to begin the photo shoot. Subject is ready in wardrobe 1 (seen above).
  • 10:05 - 10:09 - First test shots are captured on the porch and a few minutes later, the first few usable images are taken.
Head Shot
  • 10:11 - Wardrobe change 2; black shirt with blue jeans for a casual look.
  • 10:14 - 10:23 - set-up 2 in front yard by an old tree. I liked the use of the tree as a backdrop for the black shirt.

  • 10:26 - wardrobe change 3; green business dress
  • 10:29 - 10:33 - set-up 3; photographed in the driveway in front of the car. Quick thinking led to creating a sales person or auto insurance professional look. We where in luck as we found a clipboard laying around the house. It was a nicely added prop to the photo.
Commercial Stock Photography
  • 10:34 - wardrobe change 4; casual "mom" look. We scrambled for a grocery sack in the garage and filled it with groceries from the kitchen.
  • 10:37 - 10:45 - set-up 4; Opened the back of the car in the driveway to help enhance the concept of this photograph; "mom returns from shopping."
The overall photo session was quite a challenge given the time frame. However, with a few props, quick wardrobe changes, and having a preconceived idea of what I wanted to photograph helped in the quick shoot. There where images I wanted to capture, but was not able to do so due to location and a lack of a few props as well as time, but I did make a mental note of it and will be able to revisit the concepts on a later date, when I have time to plan and take the pictures.
