Photo of the Week

Redwoods at Big Sur, California in HDR

One of the things I look forward to each year is making my annual pilgrimage to Big Sur along the Central California Coast. Each summer, a group of 18 of us pack our SUV's and head north for some camping, hiking and serious adventure. Unfortunately, last year we had to detour our trip further north due to the fires at Big Sur. However, to our surprise, most of Big Sur and the camp grounds where spared from the fires and we where able to set up camp this summer.

Out of the group, I'm the only one packing cameras, lenses, and tripods. On occasion, I have my video equipment tucked away in my camera backpack as well. Needless to say, when I'm walking the trails with all my gear, hikers tend to slow down and stair at me with my camera gear in tote; it's quite a site with my tripod strapped to my backpack and me huffing and puffing up the trail. But I wouldn't trade it for the world as you can tell from this weeks photo of the week below.

Alongside the Big Sur river runs a creek. I had stopped to take a break when I was awe struck by the redwoods standing at attention a creek meandering through the trees. I sat my camera bag on the forest floor and quickly set up my tripod and camera. Because this part of the woods is dense, there where dark shadows in the foreground and extreme highlights in the distant from the light source; the sun. I photographed this image in three separate frames at two-thirds of a stop and later merged them together using Photomatix HDR software in order to get an evenly exposed image. The result yielded this stunning photo.

I think in the end, I may just have this photo printed on canvas and hung in my living room.

Scenic Beach Photography - Newport Beach, California

Scenic Photography captured at sunset in Newport Beach, California. This image was captured in a matter of minutes from parking. It was a hot summer day and I decided to take a drive to Newport Beach to capture some HDR images. But what I did not anticipate was the traffic still flowing into Newport at 6:30pm on a Saturday. I figured I would be able to find parking and set up my camera, having plenty of time to take some HDR images. Was I surprised. I could not find parking for 45 minutes and that was in a residential area off the beaten path. But, I do think it was worth it from looking at the photo of the week below.

I practically ran to the beach to capture the setting sun. What makes this image especially interesting is not just the setting sun, but the people on the beach. Here we have individuals who are separately engaged in their lives, yet come together collectively to create a stunning photograph. Children play in the crashing waves, a surfer walks along the beach. A young child dances against a setting sun, a lady makes a call on her cell phone while a couple walk along the beach holding hands. Lets not forget to mention the well timed seagulls entering the frame as thought they are a couple taking a stroll along the coast line. I don't believe I would have captured a better image had I had time to setup further south as I had planned.

On a technical note, a graduated ND2 filter was used on my Nikon D3.

Wedding Photography - Captured in a Vintage Car

I have written about this in other wedding photography photo blogs, it's the moments like these that makes the photos come to life. Capturing the expressive emotions of both the bride and groom are priceless when it comes to wedding photography. Sure, you can pose the couple and give them some motivation to express a certain type of emotion. And with any luck, you just might capture the moment. However, in this wedding photo, I was able to capture true love and happiness with the couple as they sat in the back of this vintage limousine.

While the original image was captured in color using a Nikon DSLR, I converted the image in Photoshop to high key black and white photo to enhance the nostalgia of the vintage vehicle. In addition, I think black and white photos create a more timeless piece and I capitalized on this in order to preserve the wedding day memories for this couple. In addition, I softened up the image to create a dreamy effect, staying is step with the idea of a fairytale wedding that every young girls dreams about having one day.

Studio Portrait Photography

It's definitely a departure from your traditional portrait photography. This weeks photo of the week is of a gorgeous lady who was willing to participate in a quick portrait photo session. And when I say quick, the entire session took about 20 minutes to set up studio lighting, capture about 40 shots and produce what you see below. I specifically like this image as it's not only playful, but suggestive. It leaves a lot to the imagination. Her eyes are what really capture your attention and lure you into this image. In fact, the eyes are memorizing and addictive. The overall composition is exceptional and allows a designer to use the "white space" to add copy or just focus your attention on the subject.

Candid Wedding Photography at Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga, California

Wedding photography is often thought of as posed images of both the bride and groom as well as family members. With today's wedding photography, traditional styles are still a big part for the industry, however, you will find many photographers prefer to capture the moment in a more candid or photojournalistic style. This weeks photo of the week takes place at Victoria Gardens shopping district in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The couple where just married a few miles away at Etiwanda Gardens (a wedding and reception venue). After the ceremony and family photos, we headed over to Victoria Gardens to capture candid photos. With so many excellent images to select from, I chose this photo because it reveals a lot about the couples feelings. The expression is not a forced, posed one, but one where the bride and groom seem to express their true happiness in the moments following their wedding.

A series of images where taken by me standing at one end of the kiosk lined walkway and a 200mm lens. I had the couple walk toward me, instructing them to ignore the camera and the crowed and just engage themselves in the moment. The result was a wedding photo that captured their true happiness and one where they can share with their children and grandchildren.
